CMRA, PTC, and Aurora present at the Future Ready Conference in McMurray

By Vu Nguyen

March 21, 2023 - PITTSBURGH, PA - Aurora Innovation, Pittsburgh Technical College, and Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy presented during the Future Ready conference today - a conference that brings together educators, superintendents, program coordinators, and educational partners to talk about future work pathways and partnership opportunities. The presentation started with Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy's SMART Robotics Technician program, its micro-certification courses, and the current partnerships with community partners to implement the program. Pittsburgh Technical College then presented their Robotics & Autonomous Engineering Technology (RAET) associate degree program and how opportunities are at the heart of a lot of what they do. All of their students are given opportunities for workplace experience and often end up as permanent workplaces. Aurora finished the presentation by talking about their mission and vision, the phases of autonomous driving, and the importance of the need of the workforce to sustain the industry.

PTC’s new RAET program — developed in partnership with Pittsburgh-based Aurora Innovation, LLC, a leader in autonomous driving innovation — is a multi-disciplinary approach tailored to train service engineer technicians — the skilled “doers” required to build, maintain, service and customize robotic and autonomous systems. The six-quarter program is designed to professionally prepare and support students’ futures in a wide range of applications, as robotics innovation is becoming more commonplace in industries such as healthcare, education and manufacturing.

The hands-on, 18-month multi-disciplinary program specifically geared toward service engineer technicians is a combination of PTC’s electronics, mechanical engineering, electrician and information systems technology curriculum that leverages robotics, electronics and CAD technology for a comprehensive education. As part of the curriculum, all students partake in an internship program, or capstone project, in the final quarter before entering the workforce.
