Alice 2 Workshop at CMU

Last week, Luke Reynolds and I had the chance to join in on a week long Alice 2 workshop, taught by the Alice team on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University. Alice is a free innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web.

On our Computer Science Student Network (CS2N), we offer Alice trainings, competitions, and activities, so this was a great opportunity to meet teachers who will be using Alice in their classroom and to find out more about the software. As many CS2N users know, Luke has a lot of experience with Alice programming, but I had no experience with Alice or programming before this workshop.

Wanda Dann and Don Smith led the class through various topics like camera markers, functions, loops, parameters, interactivity, variables, and more. The objectives of the workshop were:

  • Make it easier to learn/teach computer programming
  • Make learning to program engaging and creative
  • Improve student retention for entire course term
  • Attract students to computing majors/minors
  • Enable students to succeed in successive courses

Each day we had guided projects that we programmed with the instructors, which allowed us the chance to learn a wide variety of  ways to use Alice in the classroom. Below are some screenshots from those projects:

At the end of each day, we were given homework that led up to the Animation Fair on Friday, where each participant would share their final project. After a long but fun week of work, we watched every one’s projects. The creativity and skills shown were impressive! Check out our final projects below:

Overall, it was a fantastic workshop that taught me a lot. Luke even mentioned that he learned some things he didn’t know before he took the course. Alice is such a fun program to use. If you are interested in trying out Alice on your own, check our some of our Alice tutorials on CS2N.
